Der Record Store Day findet jedes Jahr am dritten Samstag im April statt und hat das Ziel den öffentlichen und medialen Fokus auf unabhängige Plattenläden zu lenken.
Zu diesem Zweck werden jedes Jahr spezielle Sonder-Releases in streng limitierter Stückzahl veröffentlicht, die dann am Record Store Day ausschließlich über die teilnehmenden Fachhändler vertrieben werden. Große Handelesketten und Online-Shops werden dabei bewusst ausgeschlossen.
Seit 2010 wird in den USA zusätzlich zum RSD im April ein Black Friday Record Store Day gefeiert, bei dem ebenfalls, für einen Tag, limitierte Special Editions in zahlreichen Indie-Plattenläden angeboten werden.
In diesem Jahr findet der Black Friday Record Store Day zum zweiten Mal auch in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz statt. Insgesamt werden am 27. November 48 exklusive Black Friday Releases in knapp 200 unabhängigen Plattenläden angeboten. Eine vollständige Liste der teilnehmenden Stores findet ihr HIER.
